Canoeing

The Tamar Canoe Association coaches canoeing every Thursday evening throughout the summer season unless weather or coach limitation permits. The club has a limited number of canoes available but will be issued on a first come first served basis, you are welcome to join the club and use your own canoe if you wish.

If you just want to paddle with like minded paddlers for a social paddle or want to improve your skills The Tamar Canoe Association is the place for you. During the summer season you can progress through your star awards if you wish, currently the club has the necessary coaches to coach and assess up to a 2 star award in canoeing. You will acquire all of the skills to be able to safely canoe with a group of paddlers under the supervision of a coach. You will practice moving forwards in a straight line, moving backwards in a straight line, turns, bracing, sideways movement, sailing, (you will be amazed what you can use as a sail) polling, self rescue these are just a few to mention.

During the winter season the club runs a limited number of white water canoe trips where we will either paddle the Upper stretches of the River Tamar or the Lower River Dart.

As part of the new 1 & 2 star award scheme you are required to learn the skills in both canoe and kayak. If you wish to see a breakdown of what is required for the 1 & 2 star award scheme please download the documents under the training section.

During the summer trips are planned at weekends which will consist of both canoes and kayaks, the club will paddle on the flat sections of rivers including Looe, Fowey and are often part of the River Wye camping weekend for those wishing to join. All trips are subject to the coaches discretion.
